Micaela Zellhofer’s artistic practice investigates paper as a spatial and structural medium. Her works emerge through a continuous process of constructing and deconstructing: geometries are generated, dissected, cut, layered, and reassembled. The practice is shaped by an experimental approach that brings together line drawing, flat color application, digital print, and three-dimensional paper-cut works. Textile threads extend the line into space. These techniques are combined and weighted differently in each piece.
Conceptually, the works examine geometric systems and explore the interplay between natural and human-made forms and structures. Textures and geometries enter into dialogue, referencing processes of transformation such as erosion, corrosion, and aging. Moreover, light and shadow function as form-generating elements that shift and destabilize existing orders.
The works open up questions of materiality, material authenticity, and durability, as well as the measure of architectural order in the face of natural dynamics.
Micaela lives and works in Wiesbaden and Mainz. Architectural thinking informs her artistic practice, alongside her current academic work in Communication Design at Mainz University of Applied Sciences.
Previously, she worked for various architectural firms and interdisciplinary offices specializing in exhibition design in Berlin, Potsdam, Darmstadt, and Wiesbaden, including agn rhein-main, Dietz Joppien Architekten, stories within architecture, KatzKaiser, and Kahlfeldt Architekten.
Micaela studied Architecture at the Technical University of Darmstadt and graduated in 2014 with a Diploma in Architecture (Dipl.-Ing. Arch.), awarded with distinction.
